Why I Stayed In Portland Oregon [After Everything]
Growing up just 10 minutes from downtown Portland has given me a deep connection to this place. I have a lot of family and friends here. It's home. But I've noticed that while Oregon remains a popular state for newcomers, many locals, especially from Portland, have been moving out after 2020.
I'm not trying to be political here. This is just an observation. If you've been thinking of moving to Portland, you've probably heard about its recent issues. The negative views on Portland are, sadly, mostly true. It's tough to see problems like homelessness, discarded needles, closed businesses, and drug use on the rise.
But before we jump to conclusions, remember two things:
Unless you've lived here for a while, the situation might not be as dire as it seems.
The challenges in Portland don't define the entire state or the larger metro area.
Why do I stay? Several reasons:
Culture: Portland has a unique, inclusive vibe. You'll see political signs, but people don't often engage in debates. Everyone is accepted, whether religious, political, or otherwise. The city celebrates diversity and individuality.
Nature: Simply put, Oregon is gorgeous. From the coast to the mountains and deserts, its landscapes are breathtaking. Stepping outside, you're surrounded by this beauty.
Relaxed Feel: Unlike bustling cities like LA or Seattle, Portland is calmer. Its roots are in blue-collar industries. The city is home to many small businesses and artisans. Here, people aren’t always trying to outdo each other. There's less pressure to "fit in."
Food Scene: Portland is known for its diverse, delicious food. From food carts to established restaurants, the choices are endless and mostly affordable.
Unique Suburbs: The city doesn't feel generic. With curvy roads, hilly terrains, abundant parks, and trees everywhere, it offers a distinct atmosphere.
In challenging times, we have a choice: leave or work towards solutions. For many locals, the idea is: "Things can only get better." While some areas suffer more than others due to issues like homelessness, newcomers can explore various neighborhoods before settling.
So, if you're considering Portland, know that millions still love living here. The media might paint a grim picture, but many residents find joy in their daily lives. As someone who has spent their entire life here, I believe in Portland's potential and beauty. Yes, there are problems, but their intensity varies by area.
In conclusion, Portland remains a place full of promise. If you're thinking of relocating, weigh the pros and cons. But always remember, this city has much to offer.
